  • A few problems, overall satisfied - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Like the cool looking 2001 body (hate the 2002) Fun to drive, but seat back is uncomfortable on long rides, needs to be more ergonomic (SP?). One year into ownership, it overheated on very short trips. Mechanic said he is seeing a lot of bad thermostats on the v6s. At 32,000 miles now, noticed a very slight delay in upshifting and a small loss of power. Dealer said everything OK. (Will be, Im sure until warrenty runs out). Large cargo area ideal to have have a lunchtime quickie with girlfriend at work. Hey, you have to think of these things.

  • It rolled over and died :( - 2003 Ford Explorer Sport

Bought this Explorer in 03. It averaged about 20 MPG (which, I think, is more than advertised). It was a little rattly - random noises that I didnt know where they were coming from. It drove well. I think the clutch was maybe starting to go out? It sometimes didnt want me to shift into 1st. But this last weekend it rolled - quite easily I might add. Though it is totaled, all passengers (including my puppy) are ok. So I guess thats a positive point about the car - it didnt kill us. The seatbelts held strong, and the frame didnt crush in too badly around us.

  • Not exactly what I thought - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

My Ford Explorer sport is a beauty to look at, fun to drive and I love my moonroof the most. But, with this being my first SUV purchase, I expected a more comfortable suspension. The only issue I have with my Explorer is the suspension on bumpy roads or expecially potholes. I think I would have research the other models more, to see if they provided a more comforatable suspension, but I just didnt want that big four-door version.

A decent truck to drive. Rode even better after I replaced the recalled Wilderness ATs with Michelin LTXs.

When I bought it it seemed pretty good, but then I started to have some problems with it.First there is some kind of vibration that comes from the trans when I am at a stop. This doesnt always happen but it is very annoying when it does. Then twice when I had to come to a sudden stop the passenger seat came flying forward. It was in a locked position both times. Then the paint started to fade all over the truck.Last thing is now the brakes squeek when I brake at 45mph or more. The dealer could "not find anything wrong with my complaints".Besides the really nice looks of this truck, and the roomy interior I am not happy.

I have driven the 2001 Ford Exploer Sport for 5 years during my college days. Just to give you insight as to who I am, I am a 23 year old engineering student studing mechanical engineering I am looking to buy a bmw 330i, 2006 now. Speaking for SUVs I want to say that Ford has built a great truck in the Explorer Sport. This is because first, the reliablility is exceptional. If you maintaine regular fluid changes, the sport will run like the first day you owned it. Second, if you do have to maintain something large, the repairs are relatively inexpensive compared to European counterparts, (Japanese SUVs may be more expensive to repair too). Thirdly, The torgue that the sport has is plenty fun

  • First SUV - 2003 Ford Explorer Sport

This Ford explorer sport is my first SUV and first 4wd vehicle. The sport puts the driver in a commanding driving position. The handling is nimble and turning radius is very tight for a vehicle of this size. Build quality seems excellent and I havent found any real flaws or defects so far. The 2dr sport was a perfect choice for me and my wife. Our son is grown and we havent yet had a rear seat passengers. The 4dr explorer is simply way more truck than we need or want. Its very smooth on the highway. Quiet and stable, very comfortable and effortless to drive. Mileage runs about 15 in city and 19 highway.

  • The seats and exterior are best points - 2003 Ford Explorer Sport

We drive the explorer back and forth from AZ to CA. Great comfortable front seats, usually gets just over 20 mpg. 4 doors are more convenient but I like the look and solid feel of the 2 door. I get lots of compliments on the metallic red color.

  • Lemon or new model year glitches? - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

In the first six months of owning my Explorer Sport the following has been replaced for defects: the electronic control module (the brain), the fuel pump, the back window shield wiper, the outer door molding, the oxygen sensor for emissions, the interior "cruise control lights". This is my second Explorer Sport. My first one (a 1998 model) was the polar oppposite of this one...never a problem and it saved my life in a rollover crash at 70mph. While the reliability on my existing Explorer is questionable, the safety systems are impeccable. At least I have the peace of mind in knowing that this vehicle can and will save my life. And lets face it, that is worth a lot!

  • Enjoyed it! - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I really enjoyed my Explorer. I hit a median at 50 miles per hour (black ice) and I believe my Explorer kept me from getting injured. It took a beating but I didnt get a scratch. Also, it drove fantastic in the rain...Im going to miss it!
